gauntlet: two rails occupying the same space

A gauntlet is a section of track where two rails of different gauges, or two parallel rails of the same gauge, occupy the same physical space. The rails are arranged so that a wheel flange can roll over one rail while another wheel engages a second rail beneath or beside it. This allows vehicles of different gauges, or traffic moving in opposite directions, to use the same narrow corridor without collision or the need for switches.

The most common application is narrow gauge railways passing through standard gauge infrastructure, or vice versa. In some cases, a standard gauge vehicle and a narrow gauge vehicle can traverse the gauntlet simultaneously in opposite directions, each using its own set of rails. The vertical or lateral spacing between the rails must be calculated precisely to the specific wheel profiles and gauge measurements involved, or wheels will either climb the wrong rail or miss it entirely.

Gauntlets appear frequently at junctions, level crossings, and station approaches where space is limited and segregating traffic would require expensive earthworks or bridge work. Historic examples exist on British railways where narrow gauge and standard gauge lines shared terminals. The term reflects the challenge: running a vehicle through a gauntlet feels like threading through an obstacle course, and if tolerances drift, derailment is the result.

Wear and maintenance are critical. Because wheels are exposed to both rails simultaneously over a short distance, side-loading increases at the gauge line where flanges press against the inner rail. Rail wear accelerates, and the critical measurement between the two rails can drift with settlement or frost action. Operators must inspect gauntlets frequently and reset rail positions to nominal gauge.

A gauntlet differs from a scissors crossing or a moveable frog. With a gauntlet, both sets of rails remain fixed and both vehicles are moving; the vehicles must be designed to handle dual-rail contact. This makes gauntlets economical for permanent installations but unsuitable for high-speed running or heavy tonnage, where the side forces become excessive. Most gauntlets are found on heritage railways, urban tramway systems, or legacy branch lines where the geometry was established decades ago and replacement would be prohibitively expensive.
