A type of railway signal which shows the aspect of a signal ahead of it, normally used in a situation where the main signal is hidden from view, for instance where there is a curve in the track.

A banner repeater is a railway signal positioned where a driver cannot see the main signal ahead due to track geometry, typically on curves, at grade changes, or in cuttings. It displays the same aspect as the hidden main signal, allowing the driver to begin braking or acceleration at the right point rather than blindly entering a section under unknown conditions. The repeater sits several hundred meters before the obstructed main signal, placed where clear sightlines exist.

The signal works mechanically or electrically in lockstep with the main signal it represents. When the main signal clears to green (or its equivalent aspect), the banner repeater clears simultaneously. When the main signal returns to red or caution, the repeater does the same. This synchronized operation depends on either direct mechanical linkage via rods and levers in older systems, or electrical interlocking in modern installations. The repeater must fail safely: if the connection breaks or power is lost, it reverts to the most restrictive aspect.

Variants and appearance

Banner repeaters take various physical forms depending on the railway and era. British railways historically used distinctive banner-type arms or disc signals that could pivot to show different colored aspects. Some systems employ color-light repeaters that mirror the aspect of the main signal using small electric lamps. Others use mechanical semaphore-style arms. The repeating function is the constant, not the mechanical form. A repeater is often smaller and simpler than a main signal since it carries no points interlocking or junction logic.

The repeater is essential where sight distances fall below operational standards but the main signal cannot be relocated. Modern railways with longer trains and higher speeds depend on them more than older branch lines did. Poorly designed repeater placement can cause confusion if drivers misidentify which signal they are actually looking at, so position and clearance of the repeater itself must be unambiguous. Some installations use additional marker plates or distinctive colors to prevent misreading.

Maintenance of a banner repeater focuses on keeping the mechanical or electrical connection to the main signal in perfect order. A repeater that falls out of sync with its main signal creates a hazardous condition. The mechanical linkage must be checked for corrosion, wear, and slack; electrical circuits must be tested for continuity and relay operation. On routes being modernized to moving-block signaling, banner repeaters are often removed as the lineside signal structure itself becomes redundant.
