barrel vault: a half-pipe roof that runs the length of a building

A barrel vault is a continuous curved roof structure that spans between two parallel walls. It has a semicircular or semi-elliptical cross-section when cut perpendicular to its length, but remains uniform, the curve does not change, along that entire length. The result looks like a half-pipe or a barrel cut lengthwise and inverted. It is one of the oldest structural forms in architecture, used since Roman times, and remains practical for covering large open spaces without internal supports.

The geometry is the key difference from other vaults. A simple barrel vault has only one curved direction: across its width. Along its length, there is no curvature, no ribs, no change in profile. This is what distinguishes it from a groin vault, which results from two barrel vaults intersecting at right angles, or from a barrel vault with ribs or coffering. The profile can be a true semicircle (360-degree radius), a segment of a circle (flatter or steeper), or occasionally an ellipse.

Historically, barrel vaults were built from stone or brick and worked well for spans up to roughly 12 to 15 meters, depending on material and thickness. Modern reinforced concrete barrel vaults can span much further. The thickness of the vault shell affects both weight and compression strength. A typical concrete barrel vault might be 100 to 200 millimeters thick for spans of 10 to 20 meters, with the curve itself carrying loads toward the supporting walls or buttresses in pure compression (in stone or brick) or through a combination of compression, tension, and shear (in reinforced concrete).

The load path in a barrel vault is not uniform along the length. The outer edges of the vault (where it meets the walls) carry higher stress than the center, especially if the vault is a true semicircle. Long barrel vaults often require intermediate supports or ring beams at intervals to prevent excessive deflection or cracking. In timber barrel vaults, laminated ribs or curved rafters follow the vault profile and are often visible from below; in concrete, the form is monolithic.

Failure in barrel vaults typically occurs at the springing line (where the curve meets the wall) if support is inadequate, or by longitudinal cracking if the vault is too thin or improperly reinforced. The name comes directly from the barrel itself: a curved wooden or metal vessel, and the vault's profile echoes the rounded side of that container. Architects and engineers favor barrel vaults in industrial buildings, storage facilities, agricultural structures, and churches because they offer clear interior space, structural simplicity, and familiar, predictable behavior under load.
