Staff is a lightweight composite cladding material used to clad temporary structures, building facades under construction, and exhibition pavilions. It consists of plaster or gypsum reinforced with fibrous material, typically jute, hemp, or paper, and is applied in layers over a timber or metal frame to create a rigid, weather-resistant skin. The material has been used in construction for over a century, particularly for rapid facade work and temporary buildings that need to look finished but will be demolished or altered.

The composition typically includes a base coat of lime or gypsum plaster mixed with long-fibre reinforcement, followed by finish coats that can be painted, scored, or textured to resemble stone, brick, or render. The reinforcing fibre prevents cracking as the material sets and gives it tensile strength; without it, a pure plaster shell would be brittle and prone to shattering on impact. Staff is usually applied at thicknesses between 25 and 50 millimetres over wooden laths or expanded metal lathing fixed to the structural frame.

The primary advantage of staff over permanent cladding materials is speed and economy. It can be applied quickly by plasterers using hand tools, requires minimal skilled formwork, and costs significantly less than masonry or render systems. This made it the standard choice for temporary exhibition structures, film set facades, and ceremonial buildings where the structure might stand for only months or a few years. Modern staff formulations may include synthetic fibres or additives to improve weather resistance and workability.

Durability and failure modes

Staff is not designed for permanent exposure. It degrades under prolonged wet conditions, with moisture penetration causing the gypsum matrix to soften and the fibre reinforcement to rot. Freeze-thaw cycles cause spalling; UV exposure and temperature cycling can cause checking and crazing of the finish coat. High winds can dislodge panels if fixings are poor. For this reason, staff structures typically require protective overcoating (paint, sealant) and regular maintenance if they remain in service beyond their intended temporary lifespan.

The term 'staff' derives from the medieval practice of applying a plaster coating over rough structural materials to create a finished external appearance, related to the verb meaning to furnish or fit out. In modern construction, it occupies a narrow niche: too temporary for permanent buildings, too slow for large-scale commercial cladding, but ideal for exhibition halls, festival structures, and architectural mockups where appearance matters more than long-term durability. Its use has declined with the availability of faster proprietary cladding systems, though it remains standard practice in heritage restoration and period-accurate reconstruction.
