A type of crossing found mainly in railway stations which allows passengers to cross between platforms at track level.

A barrow crossing is a break in the rail at platform level where the continuous rail is interrupted to allow foot traffic, barrows, trolleys, and small vehicles to pass between platforms without using a bridge or underpass. The rails themselves are cut back and the space is filled or bridged to create a level walkway, typically 1.5 to 2 metres wide depending on station layout and traffic demands.

The term comes from the original purpose: allowing porters with hand barrows (four-wheeled luggage carts) to move passenger baggage and parcels between platforms in the pre-motorised era. The name persists even though barrows are rarely used in modern stations; the feature itself remains essential infrastructure in most passenger rail facilities, particularly at through stations where platforms are separated by multiple lines.

The basic construction involves cutting the rail stock short of the crossing gap, then bridging the space with a steel or reinforced concrete plate that sits flush or slightly recessed into the ballast bed. The rail ends are secured to prevent spreading under traffic loads. Drainage must be carefully managed, as the crossing becomes a low point where water collects; perforated plates or shallow channels direct water along the trackbed.

Operational constraints and wear

Barrow crossings introduce maintenance points where rail geometry must be regularly checked, particularly for settlement or rail creep. The bridge plate itself bears dynamic loads from foot traffic and luggage trolleys, and the junction between plate and rail can develop gaps if ballast subsides. Some older crossings use wooden or cast iron plates, which are more prone to spalling and cracking.

Modern installations increasingly use interlocked steel plates or expanded metal to improve drainage and reduce tripping hazards. Safety requirements now demand slip-resistant surfaces, particularly in wet conditions, and many stations add yellow demarcation striping and tactile warning surfaces for visually impaired users. The crossing point is typically located where two platforms flank a lesser-used line, or where a goods siding requires worker access.
