trainload: what a locomotive can actually haul in one trip

A trainload is the total cargo mass or volume that a single train consists of, pulled by one or more locomotives over a given route in a single movement. It is not a fixed number but rather a function of locomotive power, rail grade, car capacity, and operational constraints. A typical freight trainload on North American mainlines runs between 100 and 150 cars, weighing 10,000 to 20,000 tonnes, though this varies widely by operation and commodity.

The weight limit of a trainload is determined first by locomotive tractive effort, which must overcome rolling resistance and grade resistance to maintain safe speeds. A modern six-axle diesel-electric locomotive (such as a SD70 or AC6000 class) can exert around 200,000 pounds of tractive force at low speed. The rail line itself sets hard constraints: grades, rail weight, bridge load ratings, and signal spacing all cap what can be safely moved. Heavy ore routes may run 200+ car trains of 30,000 tonnes or more; light-duty branch lines may handle only 50 cars at 5,000 tonnes.

Trainload capacity affects economics directly. A railroad's revenue per ton-mile scales with how efficiently cars move, and oversaturating a consist past safe or lawful limits is pointless, since the train does not go faster or reach market sooner. Conversely, underutilizing a powerful locomotive by running too-light trains wastes fuel and reduces profit. Dispatchers and train planners must balance car availability, locomotive horsepower, and track condition to construct efficient consists that meet shipper demands within operating rules.

The term also carries contractual meaning. Shipping agreements often specify trainload rates: a lower per-ton price offered when a shipper books enough cars or tonnage to fill or nearly fill a dedicated train. This is distinct from carload (single car) or less-than-carload (LCL) pricing. Trainload contracts are common for bulk commodities like coal, grain, and aggregates where volume is predictable and the shipper can stage product in yards.

Regulatory and practical limits on trainload weight have evolved. In North America, many railroads operate trains up to 17,500 tonnes on heavily upgraded corridors; some jurisdictions or older lines restrict this to 13,600 tonnes. Europe and other regions apply different standards. Longer trains (160+ cars) are becoming standard on trunk routes in North America and Australia because they reduce per-unit operating cost, even though they require longer sidings, upgraded signaling, and more sophisticated braking (such as distributed power units or dynamic braking systems).
