base flashing

Plies or strips of roof membrane material used to close-off and/or seal a roof at the horizonta-to-vertical intersections. Membrane base flashing covers the edge of the field membrane.

Base flashing is the membrane or material installed where a flat or low-slope roof meets a vertical surface, such as a wall, parapet, chimney, or equipment curb. It bridges the horizontal plane of the roof field to the vertical plane above it, creating a continuous water-shedding barrier that prevents rain and snow melt from entering the building at this vulnerable joint. The base flashing typically consists of one or more plies of the same roofing membrane used on the field, or specialized flashing membrane rated for the steeper angle and different stresses this transition experiences.

The base flashing overlaps the field membrane at its lower edge, usually by 6 to 12 inches, depending on the roofing system and code requirements. This overlap is critical: water that reaches the roof surface must be able to flow down and over the edge of the field membrane and onto the base flashing without pooling or entering the junction. The top edge of the base flashing terminates against the vertical surface, where it is secured mechanically, adhesively, or both, and then covered by counterflashing or terminated into a reglet, a horizontal slot cut into masonry or metal to house the flashing edge.

Variants and Installation

Base flashing comes in two main forms: membrane strips adhered or mechanically fastened to the vertical surface, or factory-fabricated flashing that comes as a pre-formed unit fitted to specific penetrations like roof curbs. Single-ply membranes such as EPDM, TPO, or PVC can be used as base flashing, as can multi-ply built-up roof materials. Some systems use a separate flashing cement or self-adhering membrane strips designed specifically for flashing applications. The angle of the base flashing is often steeper than the field, sometimes wrapping around a curb at near-vertical or vertical slopes, which puts additional stress on the material and the adhesive or fasteners holding it in place.

Common failures occur when the overlap between base flashing and field membrane is insufficient, when the upper termination is not properly sealed or counterflashed, when fasteners corrode and allow membrane pull-away, or when traffic or expansion and contraction cause the materials to separate. Poor installation, especially inadequate priming or surface preparation, is a frequent cause of premature failure. The joint between base and counterflashing is also a moisture trap if not carefully detailed: water can be drawn up by capillary action or trapped in the void between the two materials.

The term "base" distinguishes this element from counterflashing or cap flashing, which covers and protects the top edge of the base flashing from above. Base flashing is the lower, primary moisture barrier; counterflashing is the secondary defense. On some projects, the base flashing may also be called "transition flashing" or "wall flashing," depending on the local trade convention and the shape of the penetration. Understanding the relationship between base flashing and counterflashing is essential to diagnosing roof leaks at vertical junctions, as failure at either point can allow water into the building envelope.
