Basic ignition timing is the crankshaft angle, measured in degrees before top dead center (BTDC), at which the spark plug fires in relation to the engine cycle. On a four-stroke engine, this happens during the compression stroke when the piston is rising toward the top of the cylinder. The actual spark delivery must occur slightly before the piston reaches its highest point so that flame propagates through the combustion chamber as the piston begins its power stroke, delivering peak pressure at the optimal moment.

The timing specification varies by engine design, fuel octane, and operating conditions. Typical specifications range from 5 to 15 degrees BTDC at idle, though this number changes under load and speed. A carburetor engine might run 8 degrees BTDC at 1000 RPM, while the same engine at 3000 RPM might advance to 30 degrees or more. Compression ratio, combustion chamber shape, and fuel quality all influence the ideal angle. Spark advance functions automatically in most engines through centrifugal or vacuum mechanisms, and in modern fuel-injected engines, through engine control modules.

Incorrect basic timing creates immediate, visible problems. Timing set too early causes pinging or detonation, pre-ignition, and potential engine damage. Timing too late results in hard starting, rough idle, poor fuel economy, and loss of power. Setting the baseline timing correctly is the prerequisite for all advance curves to function properly. Mechanics typically set this static timing by disabling the advance mechanism and using a timing light to check crankshaft position against a marker on the damper or pulley.

The term basic distinguishes the fixed reference point from the total or operational timing, which changes moment-to-moment. Basic timing is what the engine runs on when all advance systems are disabled or neutralized. It represents the mechanical foundation upon which all other timing behavior is built. Without a correct basic setting, no amount of mechanical or electronic advance adjustment will restore proper engine performance.
