A truckbed is the open or partially enclosed load-carrying section mounted on the chassis behind a truck's cabin. It serves as the primary working surface for hauling goods, equipment, and materials, bearing the vehicle's payload rating through a reinforced steel or aluminum frame welded to the truck frame itself.

Bed dimensions and capacity vary by truck class. A standard full-size pickup bed runs 5.5 to 8 feet long and carries 1,000 to 3,500 pounds, depending on suspension and axle rating. Commercial trucks use longer beds, 12 to 20 feet, rated for 10,000 to 30,000 pounds or more. Flatbeds, gooseneck trailers, and stake beds serve specialized hauling needs, while drop-side and tipper beds incorporate hydraulic mechanisms for controlled unloading.

The bed floor takes the hardest wear. Traditional wood slats (usually oak or pine) absorb shock and allow drainage but require regular replacement. Steel floors resist puncture and last longer but rust if not sealed or coated. Composite and aluminum floors reduce weight but cost more upfront. Sidewalls, whether fixed stakes, removable racks, or fold-down panels, contain load and prevent spillage.

Maintenance and common problems

Rust starts at seams and underneath where moisture collects and salt accumulates in winter regions. Bed rot destroys wooden floors from the inside out; replacement costs $2,000 to $5,000. Bent sides from overloading or backing into obstacles are expensive to straighten. Worn tie-down points and D-rings fail under load, creating safety hazards. Bedliners (plastic or spray-on coatings) protect against friction and corrosion but must be checked for water traps.

The term "bed" derives from its original purpose: a sleeping surface or resting platform. In truck jargon, it simply means the flat platform where goods rest. Aftermarket bed covers, toolboxes, and storage systems are common additions that don't change the underlying structure but do reduce cargo space and aerodynamic efficiency. Payload capacity is distinct from towing capacity; exceeding bed weight rating causes frame stress and brake failure regardless of what the engine can pull.
