In letterpress and relief printing, a bearer is a type-high metal strip or block positioned in the chase (the frame holding all printing elements) to support the printing plate when the forme is being shaved or leveled. The bearer sits at the edges or margins of the printing surface, outside the area meant to carry ink. When the entire locked forme passes under the planing machine or leveling stone, the bearer contacts the cutting tool alongside the plate itself, preventing the plate from being accidentally shaved thinner or damaged during the critical setup stage.

Bearers come in two main forms: continuous strips that run along two or four edges of the chase, or discrete rectangular blocks positioned at corners or problem zones. They must be cut precisely to type height, usually 0.918 inches (23.32 mm) in traditional American measurements, matching the height of the type and plate. Steel bearers are preferred over brass because they resist wear better under repeated passes of the leveling tool. The strips are typically 0.5 to 1 inch wide and positioned far enough from the image area to remain invisible on the final print.

The bearer originated from a practical problem: large or thin printing plates would flex or cup during makeready, and without support, uneven pressure would result in uneven ink transfer. A plate left unsupported during shaving could also rock or shift, producing an uneven surface. By clamping bearers of identical height into the chase alongside the plate, printers ensured that the planing machine contacted both the plate and the bearer simultaneously, guaranteeing the plate stayed level and was cut to the correct height without risk of dubbing (rounding the edges).

Placement and Materials

Bearers are positioned strategically based on plate size and the chase layout. For a large halftone photoengraving, four-point bearers at the corners provide minimal but sufficient support. For a thin line cut or a weak plate, continuous side bearers running the full length of the chase offer more stability. The bearer must never protrude into the printing area or sit so close to the plate edge that ink bleeds beneath it during the run. Modern printers often construct custom bearers from steel rule or commercial bearer stock, while some use hardwood (boxwood or maple) as an alternative, though metal is more durable.

Confusion sometimes arises between a bearer and a reglet (a thin wooden or metal spacer used to fill blank space in the chase). The reglet does not provide support during shaving; the bearer does. Equally important is distinguishing the bearer from the frisket or overlay, which are masking tools used after lockup to control ink transfer. In modern offset and digital printing, bearers have no direct equivalent because plates and blankets are mounted on rollers or grippers, not locked in a chase, though the principle of providing uniform height support persists in the rollers themselves.
