The term encompasses many species and hybrids within the genus Iris, though the most common commercial type is Iris × germanica and its descendants, which form the bulk of ornamental bearded iris varieties grown in gardens and nurseries.

The plant grows from a rhizome, a horizontal underground stem that stores nutrients and produces new shoots each season. Unlike bulbs, rhizomes spread laterally just beneath the soil surface and must be divided every three to five years to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigor. The rhizomes of bearded iris varieties tolerate a wide range of soil types and are relatively hardy in temperate climates; many cultivars survive winters in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 10, though performance varies by variety and local conditions.

Commercial grades and cultivar classification

The bearded iris trade divides cultivars by bloom height and timing. Miniature dwarf types grow under 10 inches and flower earliest in spring; standard dwarf varieties reach 10 to 27 inches and bloom midseason; intermediate bearded types reach 16 to 27 inches; tall bearded varieties exceed 27 inches and are the most widely planted. Each class produces distinct rhizomes and propagation material graded by size and condition. Nurseries typically ship rhizomes in late summer and early fall, the natural dormancy period, though bare rhizomes can be stored cool for several months if kept dry.

Rhizome rot caused by bacterial soft rot (Pectobacterium species) and fungal infections (particularly Rhizoctonia solani) represents the main disease risk in production and after planting. Overwatering and poor drainage are primary culprits, as the rhizome sits at or just below soil level and requires air circulation. Leaf spot and rust diseases affect foliage but rarely kill the plant. Iris borers, the larvae of the moth Macronoctua onusta, tunnel into rhizomes and create entry points for secondary infection, making pest scouting essential during the growing season.

In the wider ornamental horticulture trade, bearded iris varieties command steady demand from specialty nurseries and home gardeners seeking long-lived perennials with low fertilizer requirements and minimal pest pressure compared to hybrid roses or tulips. The American Iris Society maintains comprehensive registries and hybrid classifications; breeders continue to introduce new cultivars with expanded color ranges and extended bloom seasons. The term bearded distinguishes these plants from beardless iris types, which lack the characteristic hair-like structures on the falls and include Japanese, Siberian, and spurless varieties suited to wetter growing conditions.
