belt

A band worn around the waist to hold clothing to one's body (usually pants), hold weapons (such as a gun or sword), or serve as a decorative piece of clothing.

In manufacturing, a belt is a closed loop of flexible material, typically rubber, leather, or canvas, that runs around two or more pulleys or drums to transmit mechanical power or move material. Unlike the garment that shares its name, an industrial belt converts rotational energy from a drive pulley into motion at a driven pulley, or carries products along a fixed path. The belt sits in contact with each pulley's circumference, and friction between belt and pulley surface transfers the load.

The most common variants are V-belts, which have a trapezoidal cross-section and fit into matching grooves on pulleys for higher grip and torque transmission; flat belts, which run on crowned or flat pulley faces and suit lower-speed, longer-center applications; and timing belts (or synchronous belts), which have teeth that mesh with grooved pulleys, eliminating slip and holding precise speed ratios. Conveyor belts form a different category: they carry material between two end drums and may be made of rubber bonded to steel cords, canvas plies, or synthetic fabrics, depending on load and environment.

Belt material degrades under heat, ozone, oil, and ultraviolet light, and misalignment or inadequate tension causes rapid wear. A slipping belt loses efficiency and generates heat; an over-tensioned belt strains bearings and shortens pulley life. Regular inspection of belt condition, pulley alignment, and tension using deflection measurements or laser tools prevents unexpected downtime. Dust, debris, and moisture also affect grip, so guarding and housekeeping matter.

Belt selection and performance

Choosing the correct belt type depends on speed ratio, center distance, horsepower, ambient temperature, and chemical exposure. V-belts come in standard cross-sections (A, B, C, D, E) that determine load capacity and pulley diameter range. Timing belts offer efficiency gains in precision applications such as packaging or printing, where synchronization prevents product damage. Conveyor belts are rated by tensile strength, measured in pounds per inch of width, and by cover type: rubber (general purpose), neoprene or nitrile (chemical resistance), or food-grade compounds.

The name 'belt' comes from the Latin balteus, meaning girdle or sash, reflecting the historical use of leather straps to transmit power between rotating shafts in mills and factories before electric motors dominated. Today, despite advances in direct-drive and gear systems, belts remain essential for noise reduction, vibration isolation, and cost-effective power transmission in countless applications from automotive engines to agricultural equipment.
