A berm is a horizontal or gently sloping ledge excavated into the wall of an open-pit mine, quarry, or cut. It serves as a working platform and, critically, as a barrier to contain rock falls and sliding material. Berms are cut at intervals as mining advances downward, breaking up the slope into a series of steps rather than allowing one continuous face.

The width and vertical spacing of berms depend on rock type, slope angle, and water conditions. Typical berm widths range from 3 to 15 meters, with heights between benches of 5 to 20 meters. Weaker or more fractured rock demands wider berms and closer spacing. A berm's effectiveness relies partly on its outward cant, or slight slope away from the pit, which channels water and loose material away from the slope face below.

Function in slope stability

Berms catch material dislodged by weathering, blasting vibration, or saturation. They also provide survey and inspection access along the pit wall. Without berms, a single failure high on the slope could propagate downward unchecked, potentially overrunning haul roads and work areas at the pit bottom. Monitoring berm surfaces for tension cracks or seepage is routine in large mines.

The term derives from the Dutch word berm, meaning edge or border of a dike or canal, and entered mining language through civil engineering usage. In road construction, a berm refers to the shoulder or embankment beside a roadway, which shares the same principle of lateral stability. Mining engineers distinguish between primary berms (cut during initial pit development) and secondary berms (added later to address instability).
