A Bermuda seam is a metal roof panel joint that runs perpendicular to the roof slope, with a deliberate step or offset built into the panel profile where two sheets meet. This step forces water running down the roof to break direction and shed laterally rather than following the seam line itself, which is the vulnerability point in any metal roof system. The seam sits proud of the main panel surface, typically standing 1 to 2 inches above the plane, creating a physical barrier that interrupts water flow.
The profile works because water behavior is predictable: it follows gravity and panel geometry. At a standard standing seam or lap joint running downslope, water can migrate inward through capillary action or poor sealing and find its way into the joint. The Bermuda step breaks this path. Water hits the offset, loses momentum, and sheds away from the seam rather than being drawn toward it. This is purely mechanical; it relies on geometry, not sealant or coating.
Bermuda seams appear most often in low-slope metal roofing, where the pitch is shallow enough that water movement is sluggish and lateral flow matters more. They are less common in steep-pitch applications where gravity alone moves water downslope fast enough to clear the joint. The seam is typically formed during panel fabrication, not in the field, so it requires coordination with the panel manufacturer and precise installation of each sheet in the correct orientation.
Installation and maintenance are the critical phases. Each panel must be overlapped correctly so the step faces downslope. Fasteners must not puncture the step itself, as this defeats the whole design. Over time, the step can accumulate debris, moss, or standing water if it pools rather than drains. In cold climates, ice can lodge in the step pocket and prevent proper drainage; thermal movement of the metal can also stress the seam if it is not properly detailed at panel ends and field splices.
The name references Bermuda roofing traditions in that climate, where steep pitch and reliable water shedding are non-negotiable. The term is regional and not universal in the metal roofing trade. Other trades may call similar details by different names or describe them by profile type rather than by a named seam style. The Bermuda seam sits between simple lap joints (cheaper, less durable on low slopes) and fully sealed standing seams (more labor-intensive, more reliable but dependent on sealant life).
