bi-mode
a bi-mode multiple unit which can operate either as a normal electric train or as a diesel-electric train (on unelectrified track), with the power coming from diesel generators.

A bi-mode train is a passenger multiple unit that carries both pantograph equipment for overhead electric lines and an onboard diesel-electric generation system. When the train runs on electrified track, it draws power from the catenary through the pantograph; when it enters an unelectrified section, diesel engines automatically start and power electric generators that feed the traction motors. The changeover is seamless to passengers and happens at line speed without stopping.
The diesel generators are typically smaller than those in a pure diesel-electric train because they only need to match the power demand of the moment rather than accelerate a dead-cold train from standstill. Most bi-mode units built since the 2000s use two or three MTU or Cummins diesel engines rated between 400 and 800 kW each. Fuel tanks are sized to complete journeys across unelectrified sections, often 50 to 150 km depending on the operating plan.
Bi-mode trains solve a real infrastructure problem: upgrading an entire regional rail network to full electrification costs tens of millions per route, and some branch lines see too little traffic to justify that outlay. By operating bi-mode, a single fleet can cover mixed networks without maintaining two separate train types. This simplifies rostering and crew training but adds capital cost per unit and increases mechanical complexity.
Failure modes and maintenance
Bi-mode sets fail more often than pure-electric units because they carry diesel engines, fuel systems, and generator switchgear in addition to standard electric train systems. Pantograph faults, diesel cold-start problems in winter, and contaminated fuel are common line defects. Battery banks must be sized to start the diesel engines even if the catenary fails. Operators must also manage fuel consumption on branches where diesel running costs exceed electric costs.The term reflects railway engineering culture: a mode is an electrical state or operational condition, and bi- signals the ability to switch between two distinct modes. Tri-mode units exist in prototype form but remain rare; they add a battery pack for operation into zero-emission city centres. Britain's Arriva Rail London and Siemens Desiro City have operated bi-mode fleets on suburban networks with mixed electrification since the early 2010s.
