A fit rod is a straight steel rod, typically 3/16 inch to 1/2 inch in diameter, used to measure the usable depth of a drilled or tapped hole. The operator inserts the rod into the hole until it bottoms, then withdraws it and measures where the hole depth ended on the rod's length, usually marked with a witness mark or read against a scale. This tells the machinist or assembler how long a bolt must be to seat properly without binding or leaving excess thread exposed.
Fit rods come in two main configurations: smooth rods for measuring blind holes (holes that do not pass through), and rods with a knurled or stepped end to prevent them from sliding too deeply into through-holes. Some fit rods have calibrated markings every half-inch or inch to speed reading. The rod must be straight and free of burrs, otherwise the measurement will be false and the assembled fastener may not clamp properly or may protrude dangerously.
Why this matters in production
In high-volume assembly, incorrect bolt length causes two problems: if too short, the joint has no clamping force and fails under load; if too long, the bolt protrudes past the nut and creates a snag hazard or prevents the cover from closing flush. Fit rods allow quick, repeatable checks before fasteners are ordered or installed, reducing scrap and rework. They are especially critical when threads are damaged, hole depth varies due to material thickness or casting variation, or when counterbores or spacers are in play.
The fit rod is a hand tool that requires no power, electricity, or calibration certificate. It sits in the machinist's pocket or tool roll and works on any scale, from small fractional holes to larger diameters. Because it is passive and mechanical, it remains reliable even in dirty shops where electronic gauges might fail. A shop maintaining a set of fit rods in 1/8 inch increments of diameter can handle most fastening jobs without stopping to calculate bolt lengths from engineering prints.
