In aviation maintenance and flight operations, bingo refers to the calculated fuel state at which an aircraft has just enough remaining to reach a designated airfield, typically the home base or a pre-planned alternate, with legal reserves intact. This is not a random fuel quantity but a precise figure worked out before flight based on distance, aircraft weight, winds, and regulatory minimums. Pilots and dispatchers treat bingo as a hard limit: once an aircraft reaches bingo fuel, no further detours or holding patterns are permitted.

The term originated in military aviation, where it described the moment a fighter or patrol aircraft had consumed enough fuel that immediate return became mandatory. The word itself likely derives from the game bingo, where reaching a goal state triggers immediate conclusion, though the exact etymology is disputed among aviators. By extension, bingo became used as an adjective to describe any fuel quantity that signals a go-or-no-go decision point.

Different aircraft types and mission profiles generate different bingo values. A cargo jet flying from New York to Miami calculates bingo based on getting back to New York with required reserves (typically 5 to 10 percent of total fuel capacity, depending on regulation and aircraft type). An air ambulance operating in remote regions might have multiple bingo points for different alternate airfields. The key variable is never the amount of fuel burned; it is always the amount remaining when safety margins must be protected.

Maintenance technicians encounter bingo as a constraint during troubleshooting and test flights. If an engine, fuel system, or electrical malfunction develops during a test flight, the pilot will declare bingo fuel sooner than scheduled, forcing an immediate return or diversion. Ground crews must understand how their repairs affect aircraft weight and fuel consumption, because a heavier aircraft or one with engine degradation will reach bingo faster than baseline estimates.

Bingo is not the same as minimum fuel or emergency fuel. Minimum fuel is the absolute legal bottom, set by regulation; bingo is the operational decision point calculated well above that minimum. Once bingo is declared, air traffic control is notified that the aircraft will accept no further delays. Confusing these thresholds has caused fuel emergencies, so maintenance documentation and flight plans must clearly specify which value applies to each mission.
