A blabbermouth is a fixed or portable foam-dispensing nozzle used in aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) operations. The nozzle produces a wide, turbulent spray pattern and generates significant noise during discharge, hence the colloquial name. It is designed to apply Class B firefighting foam over large areas quickly, typically used on apron fires, fuel spills, and aircraft accidents where rapid foam coverage is critical.
The nozzle works by mixing compressed air or inert gas with liquid foam concentrate and water at high pressure. This aeration creates a stable foam blanket rather than a wet stream. The expansion ratio, usually between 8:1 and 12:1 depending on foam type and nozzle design, means a small volume of concentrate covers extensive ground. The wide spray angle makes blabbermouths effective for pre-wetting runways and surrounding areas, though less precise than hand lines for targeted application.
Variants and deployment
Blabbermouths are mounted on ARFF trucks, in fixed systems around hangars and fuel storage areas, or used as standalone portable units. Truck-mounted versions typically operate at pressures of 100 to 200 psi and may have adjustable spray patterns. Fixed installations at larger airports are often integrated into foam deluge systems controlled remotely from the fire station. Portable units require connection to external foam and water supplies.
The main limitation is overspray and foam waste inherent to the wide-pattern design. In windy conditions, much foam disperses before reaching the fire. Modern ARFF operations often combine blabbermouths for initial area coverage with hand lines or monitor nozzles for final attack on the seat of the fire. Operators must account for foam type requirements: aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) versus fluoroprotein foams have different mixing ratios and discharge characteristics that affect nozzle selection.
Maintenance focuses on preventing corrosion and blockages in the air induction passages and foam delivery channels. Salt spray and dried foam residue are common problems at coastal airports. Nozzle passages must be cleared and the unit flushed with fresh water after each use, particularly when switching between foam types.
