Blanketing is a granular layer, typically 150 to 300 mm thick, laid directly on the subgrade beneath a railway trackbed. Its purpose is straightforward: to prevent the upward migration of fine soil particles and water from clay or silt subsoils when wheel loads compress the ballast above. Without it, clay gets pumped to the surface, muddying the ballast, degrading drainage, and forcing expensive maintenance cycles.
The material itself is usually clean gravel, sand, or a specified quarried stone grading, nothing that will pass through ballast or stick to it. The layer acts as a physical and hydraulic separator. When a 30-tonne axle load reaches the ballast, the force is distributed downward and laterally. A blanket prevents the ballast from pressing clay fines upward into its voids, which would happen rapidly on poor subgrades, especially under repeated heavy traffic or in high water table conditions.
Blanketing becomes critical on routes with clay subsoils, particularly in damp climates or where the water table sits close to the track formation level. A ballasted track on sand or gravel may not need it. A concrete slab track does not, since the slab itself provides the separation. But a typical main line over clay, carrying frequent heavy trains, will fail within years without proper blanketing, the ballast becomes contaminated, loses its ability to shed water and redistribute load, and the track drops out of geometric tolerance faster than tamping can restore it.
Installation and failure modes
Blanketing is laid before ballast placement during new construction or during major trackbed renewal. It must remain continuous and undisturbed; tearing or gaps allow the very problem it prevents. On existing track where subgrade has failed, blanketing may be added by excavating the ballast, inserting the layer, and restoring ballast, a costly intervention that signals earlier neglect. Inspection involves visual checks during tamping work or when ballast is removed for cleaning; saturated, discolored, or clay-mixed ballast above the blanket suggests the layer has failed or was never present.
The term itself simply describes the act of laying a protective cover, borrowed from common usage. In rail engineering, it reflects the practical reality: a thin but essential textile or granular sheet placed between hostile soil and expensive ballast, keeping them apart under the grinding stress of trains.
