Blankholder: the clamp that stops metal from wrinkling

A blankholder is a spring-loaded or hydraulic press component that applies downward force to hold a metal blank flat and immobile against the die during stamping or deep drawing operations. It sits above the workpiece, typically mounted on the upper platen or bolster of a hydraulic or mechanical press, and prevents the blank from lifting, buckling, or wrinkling as the punch drives downward into the material.

In deep drawing, where a flat sheet is formed into a cup or box shape, the blankholder plays a critical role in controlling material flow. As the punch descends and the metal is drawn downward into the die cavity, the blankholder's pressure must be calibrated precisely: too light and wrinkles form in the vertical walls or flange; too heavy and the material tears or the punch stalls. The force is measured in tons and applied over a specific surface area called the blankholder ring or pad, which contacts the outer flange of the workpiece.

Blankholder pressure varies by material and part geometry. Aluminum alloys typically require 20 to 40 percent of the punch force; mild steel often needs 30 to 50 percent. A blankholder designed for one gauge or alloy may fail on another, so tooling must be adjusted or replaced when production changes. Spring-based blankholder systems offer simpler setup but less precision; hydraulic systems allow pilot-operated adjustment during the stroke.

The blankholder is not the same as the die itself. The die is the cavity that defines the final shape; the blankholder is the clamping mechanism that manages the blank's behavior during forming. Some presses combine both functions in an integrated tool assembly; others use separate components.

Worn or damaged blankholder pads leave witness marks on the workpiece or allow slippage, both of which reject parts. The pads are typically made from cast iron, ductile iron, or hardened steel, depending on production volume and material hardness. In automotive and appliance stamping, the blankholder is as essential to part quality as the punch and die, yet often receives less attention in maintenance schedules.
