bleeding edge: ink that runs off the page
In offset and digital printing, the bleeding edge is the point where printed image intentionally extends beyond the trim line of the finished sheet. The ink runs past where the guillotine will cut, ensuring no white border remains after trimming. This is a deliberate setup, not a defect, though execution demands precision.
A typical bleed allowance is 3 to 5 millimeters on each side where trim occurs. The file itself must be built larger than the final trim size, with image content extending into this bleed zone. Without adequate bleed, a slight misalignment during cutting will expose unprinted paper at the edge, breaking the intended edge-to-edge color or pattern. The press still prints only the specified area, but that area is oversized to accommodate cutter drift.
Where bleeding matters
Bleeding edge is critical for full-color covers, business cards with colored backgrounds, book jackets, and any job where the design intent is color or image all the way to the trim. It is less relevant for text-heavy work where white margins are acceptable. In folding carton production, bleed becomes essential when labels wrap around edges or when exterior color must appear continuous across flaps.
The term originates from the visual effect: image content appears to bleed, or seep, beyond its expected boundary. In pre-digital workflows, this was achieved by printing larger sheets and cutting them down. Modern digital files encode the bleed mathematically, but the principle remains unchanged. Any professional print specification now includes bleed as a required parameter, usually stated in the job setup alongside trim size and fold lines.
Common pitfalls include designing without bleed space (requiring re-separation of artwork), setting bleed values inconsistently across color separations, or miscommunicating bleed requirements between designer and printer. Raster images placed without sufficient edge pixels will show pixelation or thinning at the bleed boundary if scaled to fill the zone. Vector artwork must explicitly extend into the bleed area; text and critical elements must stay safely inside the trim line by at least the specified bleed amount.
