A block instrument is an electromechanical or electronic device mounted in a signal box or control centre that manages the status of a single railway block section. It displays whether the section ahead is occupied, clear, or available for a train to enter, and transmits that information to adjacent signal boxes. The instrument physically locks the signal lever when a train occupies the block, preventing a second train from being accepted into the same section.
The mechanical block instrument, standard in manual signalling, consists of a needle dial showing three or four positions: "line clear" (white), "train on line" (red), and often an intermediate "caution" state. A solenoid, energised by the adjacent box, moves the needle mechanically. The signaller uses a small plunger or switch to send the "bell" signal (a sequence of taps) to request the line ahead, and operates their own instrument's switch to transmit the acceptance or refusal back. The two boxes must agree before a signal can be pulled off to permit a train into the block.
The instrument incorporates an electrical lock that prevents the signal lever from being moved until the receiving signal box has sent back a "line clear" signal in response to the request. Once a train is reported as occupying the block (signalled by the "train on line" button at the far end), the instrument locks the lever again and holds it until the train passes completely and the line is manually cleared. This interlocking principle, enforced by the instrument itself, is the foundation of block signalling safety and prevents conflicting movements on the same section of track.
Modern block instruments in resignalled lines are often replaced by digital displays and computer-based signalling systems, but the logic remains identical. The term "block instrument" persists in heritage and preserved railways where mechanical signalling is maintained, and in the technical vocabulary of signalling engineers discussing the principles of safe train spacing.
