A mill car is a wheeled vehicle designed to run on fixed rails laid throughout a mill, factory, or processing plant. It carries bulk materials, scrap, waste, or finished goods between work stations, furnaces, crushers, and storage areas. The car itself is simple: a platform or hopper body mounted on four wheels that grip a standard or narrow gauge rail track. Mill cars range from small hand-pushed units weighing under 500 pounds to large motorized cars carrying 30 tons or more.

The rail system that supports mill cars is usually 18 to 36 inches of gauge, though full-size industrial railways may run standard gauge tracks. The wheels have flanges that grip the rail head, eliminating the need for steering and allowing long, rigid trains of cars to move through tight factory spaces. Unlike shop carts on rubber tires, mill cars cannot deviate from their fixed route, which is both their constraint and their advantage: they follow the same path with absolute precision and can handle far heavier loads over the same track year after year.

Mill cars are most common in steel mills, paper plants, foundries, and bulk chemical facilities. In a steel mill, small tipper cars carry molten slag away from furnaces along rails embedded in the floor. In a paper mill, open-top cars move wet pulp and recycled fiber between digesters and bleach towers. In quarries and aggregate plants, dump cars carry crushed stone to screens and stockpiles. Many mill cars are manually pushed or towed by a small electric locomotive or winch system rather than self-propelled.

Maintenance and failure modes

Mill car wheels and axles wear quickly under load and repetitive use, especially when carrying hot, abrasive, or corrosive material. Track misalignment, rust, and buildup of scale or slag can derail a car or cause wheels to slip. Hoppers crack from thermal shock or the stress of being banged together when cars couple. Brakes, where fitted, seize from moisture and chemical exposure. The bearing surfaces require regular regreasing and replacement; seized bearings are a common cause of carriage failure.

The term mill car reflects its historical origin: it belongs to the infrastructure of the mill itself, not to general transport. It sits at the boundary between fixed plant (like a conveyor) and movable equipment (like a handcart). Because mill cars are site-specific and often custom-built or heavily modified to suit a particular process, there is no single standard design. A mill car in a cement works looks nothing like one in a brewery, yet both serve the same fundamental purpose: moving volume cheaply and repetitively along a fixed path.
