In electrical engineering, a blocked condition occurs when a circuit path is intentionally or unintentionally interrupted, preventing current flow or signal transmission. This can happen through a physical break in the conductor, activation of a protective device, or a deliberate disconnection. The term appears in both power distribution and signal processing contexts, though with subtly different meanings depending on the system type.
In power systems, a blocked feeder or line occurs when a breaker trips and locks open, or when a manual disconnect is thrown. This state persists until the fault is cleared and the operator manually resets the breaker or switch. A blocked transformer tap changer means the mechanism that regulates voltage has been locked in position, typically for maintenance or to prevent hunting (rapid oscillation between tap positions). Blocked also describes a power rectifier stage that refuses to conduct because its triggering pulse has been withheld or disabled.
Signal and Control Systems
In telecommunications and control circuits, blocked refers to a signal path that has been gated off or disabled. A blocked input means that an electronic gate or relay is preventing a signal from reaching downstream components, even though the signal source is active. In industrial control, a blocked output means the final control element (a motor starter, valve solenoid, or contactor) has been electrically disabled by a logic interlock or software command, independent of whether the demand signal is present. This is a critical safety feature: blocking prevents equipment from running when conditions are unsafe.
Blocked also appears in communications: a blocked channel means the frequency or time slot is unavailable or has been deliberately disabled by network management. In older telephone and radio systems, a blocked receiver meant the automatic gain control (AGC) had shut down the input stage to prevent overload from a strong signal.
The term is preferred in electrical contexts because it is action-oriented and reversible, unlike "open" or "shorted," which describe physical states. A blocked condition implies a protective or controlled state, whereas an open circuit might suggest failure. In troubleshooting, identifying what is blocked and why (fault lockout, maintenance mode, interlock trip, user command) is the first diagnostic step.
