A board finger is a thin, rectangular metal tab that protrudes from the edge of a printed circuit board, typically from its end connector region. These fingers are the male contacts that mate with the female sockets of an edge connector or backplane slot. They carry electrical signals and power between the circuit board and the host system, making them critical pathways for data and current.

Board fingers are almost always plated with gold or gold alloy over a base of copper or nickel. Gold thickness typically ranges from 0.08 to 0.13 micrometres, chosen to provide low contact resistance while resisting corrosion and wear. The fingers themselves are usually stamped or etched from the board's copper layer during PCB fabrication, or sometimes soldered on as separate metal contacts. Edge connector fingers typically measure 2.54 mm wide on standard spacing, reflecting the ubiquitous 0.1-inch grid that defined PC and industrial electronics design for decades.

The quality of board fingers directly affects system reliability. Poor gold coverage, pitting, or oxidation under the plating causes intermittent connections and signal loss. Repeated insertion and withdrawal during maintenance or troubleshooting wear away the plating, eventually exposing base metal that oxidizes quickly. High-cycle applications, such as removable expansion cards in industrial controllers, experience accelerated degradation of finger contact surfaces.

Common failure modes and design practice

Fingers that stand slightly proud of the PCB edge and fingers recessed slightly are both used depending on connector style; proud fingers reduce contact pressure on insertion, while recessed designs allow the connector housing to guide alignment. Board fingers work best when mated with connectors that apply consistent contact force across all fingers simultaneously, preventing any single finger from bearing disproportionate wear.

The term "board finger" reflects the physical appearance: short, narrow projections that resemble fingertips lined up along the board's edge. In some older equipment, users referred to a complete edge-connector assembly as a "fingered board" or "card with fingers". Today the term remains standard in PCB design, manufacturing, and field service documentation, particularly in aerospace, industrial control, and legacy computing contexts where edge connectors remain common.
