A doctor blade is a thin, flat metal or composite strip held under tension against a rotating cylinder or roll to remove excess material. In printing, it scrapes surplus ink from an anilox roller or impression cylinder; in photocopying and laser printing, it cleans residual toner from the photoconductor drum. The blade rides at a precise angle, typically 30 to 45 degrees, with pressure measured in grams per linear centimeter. Stainless steel and hardened spring steel are standard materials, chosen for wear resistance and the ability to maintain a sharp edge under continuous contact.

The name is industrial folklore. No one is certain of the origin, though it appears in papermaking equipment by the 1930s. One account credits a papermaker named Doctor who invented the device; another suggests it earned its title because it "heals" defects in printing by removing unwanted ink accumulation. The term stuck across multiple trades and is now universal shorthand for any precision scraper blade used on rotating surfaces.

Proper setup demands precise blade geometry and mounting. The blade must sit at the correct angle and maintain even contact across its full width, or streaking and uneven cleaning result. Pressure that is too light leaves ink residue; pressure that is too heavy accelerates blade wear and can damage the cylinder. Most setups allow for blade advance, a mechanism to push the blade forward as its edge rounds and dulls, extending service life from weeks to several months depending on press speed and ink type.

Blade failure appears as lines or spots in the printed image, ink buildup on the roll, or deposits on paper. Failure modes include edge chipping, caused by hard particles or debris in the ink; glazing, where the blade edge becomes polished smooth and loses its cutting edge; and mechanical damage from misalignment during installation. Regular inspection and proper ink filtration prevent most premature wear.

Doctor blades are found wherever rotary printing happens: lithographic and flexographic presses, gravure equipment, label printing systems, and digital toner-based devices. Each application demands different blade materials and thicknesses. Gravure typically uses blades thinner than 0.1 mm for fine detail; flexo may use composite blades bonded to a steel backing for durability at high line speeds. The blade is cheap and replaceable, but its condition directly affects print quality and production efficiency.
