A bobble is a small cluster of looped or tangled stitches that protrudes from a fabric surface, creating a raised bump or knot. In knit goods, woven textiles, and sewn garments, it appears as a discrete flaw rather than an overall pattern defect. The bobble disrupts the flat plane of the cloth and is immediately visible to touch and sight, making it a critical quality rejection point in apparel manufacturing.
Bobbles form through several mechanisms depending on the production process. In knitting, they arise when a needle snags loose yarn, creating excess loop height; in weaving, they occur when shuttle tension is uneven or when warp threads tangle during the pass; in sewing, they result from thread tension imbalance, needle deflection, or incomplete stitch formation. Each cause leaves a distinct signature: knit bobbles tend to be softer and more fibrous, while woven bobbles are often tight and pinched. The defect is most noticeable on smooth, fine fabrics where light reflection makes it stand out.
Detection and Prevention
Bobbles are caught through visual inspection under adequate lighting, often during cloth examination on inspection frames or during the folding operation. Pilling, by contrast, occurs after the garment reaches the consumer through normal wear and abrasion. Bobbles are production defects; pilling is a durability issue. Prevention requires regular needle and shuttle maintenance, correct thread tension calibration for the fiber type and gauge, and operator training to recognize early warning signs such as thread drag or unusual vibration.
The name derives from the bobbing or bouncing motion of the raised stitch cluster when the fabric moves. A single bobble can downgrade an entire panel in premium knitwear or tailored garments, pushing the piece into a lower quality grade or rejection. Mass production environments track bobble frequency as a key performance indicator for machine maintenance schedules and operator competence. High bobble rates signal worn spindles in knitting frames, misaligned presser feet in sewing lines, or inadequate thread quality.
