bogie

One of two sets of wheels under a locomotive or railcar; also, a structure with axles and wheels under a locomotive, railcar, or semi which provides support and reduces vibration for the vehicle.

bogie: the wheeled frame that carries and steers a train car

A bogie is an assembly of axles, wheels, and a supporting frame mounted under a locomotive or railcar. It does two critical jobs: it distributes the vehicle's weight across multiple wheels so that no single contact point crushes the rail, and it allows the car to navigate curves by letting the wheels steer independently or pivot as a unit. Most freight and passenger cars ride on two bogies, one at each end, each typically carrying two axles and four wheels, though heavy freight locomotives often have three or more bogies.

The bogie frame itself is a structural steel casting or fabrication, usually a rectangular beam with pivot points where it connects to the car body above. This pivot, called the king pin, allows the bogie to rotate beneath the car as it rounds a bend. Springs and dampers mounted between the bogie frame and the car body isolate vibration and jolting from rail joints and uneven track, which protects cargo and improves ride quality. Without this suspension system, every click and thud from the track would transmit directly to the load.

A two-axle bogie, the standard for most cars, has two wheels on each axle for four wheels total per bogie. A three-axle bogie appears under some heavy ore wagons and specialized equipment. Locomotives often use a radial or articulated bogie design where the axles can move laterally to hug the rail through tight curves, reducing flange wear. Passenger cars frequently have less rigid connections between bogie and body to further reduce transmitted vibration. The wheels themselves range from roughly 760 mm diameter on freight stock to over 1000 mm on express locomotives.

When a bogie fails, the results are dangerous and costly. Bearing seizure in an axle box generates heat and can ignite a bearing fire, forcing emergency stops. Cracked frames may lead to wheel shift or derailment. Flat spots on wheels from locked brakes create hammering that damages the bogie and the track. Regular inspection of bogie condition, checking for loose bolts, worn bearing seals, and play in pivot points, is standard maintenance across all rail operations.

The term bogie comes from the English truck or frame, though its exact origin is debated; some trace it to Bogy, an early American inventor, while others suggest a Scottish or railway slang root. In North American usage, bogie and truck are often used interchangeably, though truck sometimes refers to the entire assembly under a vehicle in general. The British prefer bogie for rail use. Regardless of regional name, the bogie remains the fundamental load-bearing and guidance system of rail transport, invisible beneath every train but essential to every movement.
