A bogie bolster wagon is a flat railway wagon designed to carry long timber loads, typically logs or squared beams. Two four-wheel bogies mounted underneath provide the running gear, while heavy timber baulks (bolsters) laid transversely across the wagon bed act as load supports and spacers. The bolsters keep the cargo clear of the wagon deck and distribute weight to the bogies, allowing the wagon to haul loads that would be awkward or impossible on a conventional flat wagon.
The bolsters are usually rough-sawn timber beams, 6 to 9 inches square, positioned perpendicular to the wagon's length at intervals of 4 to 6 feet. This arrangement prevents the load from shifting and allows air to circulate underneath for drying. The wagon bed itself may be bare metal or have light decking; the bolsters do the structural work. The wagon typically has no fixed sides or ends, relying instead on the load's natural friction and any securing chains or straps.
Variants and loading practice
Variants include drop-end versions where the bolsters are removable or hinged, allowing easier loading and unloading. Some designs have adjustable bolster spacing for different log lengths. The wagon's length and bogie spacing govern the maximum unsupported span of the load. Overhanging logs are common and may require ballast in the wagon bed or weights attached to the frame to prevent tipping when negotiating curves.
Damage occurs when logs shift under braking or cornering, or when wet timber swells and splits the bolsters. Bolster decay from moisture is common on wagons used continuously in service; replacement bolsters are a routine maintenance cost. Severe overloading or uneven distribution can cause the wagon frame to twist or the bogies to derail on sharp curves.
The bogie bolster is standard in railways serving forestry, sawmilling, and timber yards across Europe and beyond. Its design reflects the practical reality that industrial timber often arrives rough and irregular, and needs simple, robust handling rather than fine-tolerance equipment. The wagon remains in regular use wherever rail-borne timber traffic exists.
