bolster: the spacer that lets wagon wheels turn

A bolster is a wooden or metal block mounted on top of a wagon axle, typically standing 4 to 8 inches high, that raises the wagon body enough to clear the wheel when the front axle turns. On a horse-drawn wagon, the front wheels must pivot sharply during turns, and without this clearance, the wagon body would jam against the wheel rim. The bolster solves this problem by lifting the load bed just enough to let the front wheels articulate freely beneath it.

The bolster sits directly atop the front axle and typically receives a pivot pin that lets the wagon bed swivel slightly relative to the axle during turns. In simpler wagons, it is merely a thick wooden block, sometimes reinforced with iron straps or bands. In more refined designs, the bolster becomes part of a fifth-wheel assembly, a mechanism that transfers load from the wagon body to the axle while allowing rotation. The height and width of the bolster must be carefully matched to the wheel diameter and the wagon bed width to work properly.

Common materials include hardwood such as oak or elm for the main block, with iron plates bolted or riveted to high-wear surfaces. The interface between bolster and axle must be smooth to prevent binding. On older wagons, bolsters sometimes show deep grooves or wear patterns from years of swiveling under load. Builders had to account for wood shrinkage and seasonal movement when fitting a bolster, as a loose connection would allow dangerous rocking during transport.

The term bolster derives from Old English and earlier Germanic roots meaning to strengthen or support, which accurately describes its function. In railway and industrial equipment, bolsters appear again in different forms, such as the reinforced beam that supports a truck bed or a specialized bolster used in railroad cars. The principle remains the same: using a sturdy intermediate support to handle forces that would otherwise damage the primary structure.

A worn or damaged bolster is a serious defect that allows the wagon body to rest too low, causing wheels to catch on the body during turns and potentially tipping the load. A missing bolster pin or a bolster that has split along its grain will make a wagon unsafe to operate. Repair usually means replacing the entire bolster block rather than trying to patch it, as the structural integrity must be absolute when supporting a heavy load over rough ground.
