A structure, often a folk art construction or an eco-friendly dwelling, built primarily using glass or plastic bottles bound together with mortar or other materials.

A bottle house is a structure where discarded glass or plastic bottles are embedded in mortar to form walls. The bottles are laid horizontally or vertically in courses, with their bases and necks creating a lattice that is then grouted or mortared solid. The result is a wall that is roughly 12 to 18 inches thick, depending on bottle diameter and mortar coverage. The bottles themselves bear no structural load; the mortar carries the weight. This is not a load-bearing technique but rather a thermal mass and waste-reduction strategy.

Glass bottles perform poorly as structural material because glass is brittle and has virtually no tensile strength. Clear or colored glass also transmits light through the wall, which can be useful in non-load-bearing partition walls or sheds but creates thermal bridges and glare in living spaces. Some builders use opaque or painted bottles to limit light transmission. Plastic bottles, which are occasionally substituted, degrade under ultraviolet exposure and offer even less structural integrity, though they are lighter and easier to handle.

Building codes and practical limits

Bottle houses have no recognized structural capacity in modern building codes. They cannot be used for exterior bearing walls or any element that supports floor or roof loads. In jurisdictions that permit them at all, they are restricted to infill, partition walls, or non-structural veneers. The technique is labor-intensive because bottles must be collected, cleaned, sorted for size consistency, and laid individually. Mortar must fully encapsulate each bottle to prevent water infiltration and delamination. If voids remain, moisture enters, stagnates, and causes freeze-thaw damage in cold climates.

The term "bottle house" was popularized in the early 2000s alongside the broader green building and salvage architecture movements, though the practice itself is much older. Rural communities in hot, arid regions (parts of the American Southwest, North Africa, and the Middle East) have used bottles in mud and lime mortar for over a century, primarily as a low-cost use of discarded containers. The structural performance is weak, but in single-story, low-wind, frost-free environments, the risk is manageable if mortar is maintained.

Thermal performance is modest. A bottle-filled wall has lower U-value than hollow block but higher than solid masonry because the bottles themselves are poor insulators and create thermal mass without insulation value. Water absorption is the primary failure mechanism: glass does not absorb water, but mortar does, and once saturation occurs, the wall loses strength and becomes prone to cracking and spalling in freeze-thaw cycles. Bottle houses require diligent waterproofing at the exterior and ventilation of the wall cavity if one exists. They work better as novelty or temporary structures than as permanent dwellings in wet or cold climates.
