break of gauge

an occurrence where a railway with one track gauge meets another railway of a different gauge, thus requiring transhipment of goods and passengers, or a change of bogies on the train.

break of gauge: where two rail networks refuse to fit together

A break of gauge occurs at the junction point between two railway lines that operate at different track widths, forcing goods and passengers to transfer between incompatible trains. This is a physical constraint, not a scheduling issue: a bogie designed for 1,435 mm standard gauge cannot run on 1,000 mm meter gauge track, or 1,676 mm broad gauge, without mechanical intervention.

The practical solutions divide into two categories. Transhipment moves cargo from one train to another across a platform or warehouse, adding labour, time, and handling cost. Bogie exchange allows the train body to remain on the car while workers physically swap out the wheelsets and bogies underneath, a process that can take an hour or more per train. Some railways maintain special dual-gauge sections where three rails allow standard gauge vehicles to pass through, though this is expensive and rare.

Geographic and political history created most breaks of gauge. Russia, Finland, and former Soviet territories standardized on 1,520 mm gauge. India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka use 1,676 mm. Australia, parts of South America, and colonial Africa chose 1,000 mm meter gauge. Britain and most of western Europe settled on 1,435 mm. A train crossing from France into Spain, or from India into Myanmar, hits a break of gauge.

The cost compounds over distance. A major transshipment facility in a border town requires substantial infrastructure: cranes, loading platforms, warehousing, customs facilities. Bogie exchange depots need pits, hydraulic equipment, and skilled staff. Both methods slow freight transit and add 10 to 30 percent to overall transportation cost depending on cargo weight and handling complexity.

Modern freight containers bypass some problems by being lifted directly between trains on different gauges, but this requires specialized cranes at both ends and works only for containerized goods. Passenger breaks of gauge remain more awkward: some routes force passengers to change trains; others use specially designed variable-gauge bogies that can adjust mechanically, though these are expensive and slower than fixed-gauge equipment.
