A yard slug is an unpowered or minimally powered locomotive unit used in rail yards to move cars over short distances. It has no cab, no engine, and a deliberately low profile, making it invisible to the operator of the powered unit pushing or pulling behind it. The slug itself is towed or pushed by a separate locomotive, usually stationed immediately to its rear, allowing that operator to see rail ahead and around the slug without obstruction.
The absence of a cab is the defining feature. A traditional switcher locomotive sits high enough that an operator inside its cab cannot see the rails directly in front of it, creating a significant blind spot. The yard slug solves this by staying low and staying out of the way. Rails and switches visible to the rear-mounted operator remain visible, eliminating the need for ground crew to relay hand signals or for the operator to dismount repeatedly to check track geometry and car placement.
Yard slugs range from 40 to 60 feet long and typically weigh 60,000 to 100,000 pounds. Some are equipped with independent brakes and drawbars designed to couple firmly to the powered unit behind them; others are semi-permanently paired with a specific locomotive. A few diesel-hydraulic slugs retain minimal engine power for self-movement in emergencies or short movements without a helper, but most are purely passive, drawing all propulsion from their partner unit.
Variants and Duty
A slug may be a purpose-built new unit or a converted caboose or short boxcar with the superstructure removed. Rail yards with intensive switching operations deploy slugs to handle multiple cars per move: one slug and one powered switcher can handle volume that would require two full switchers, reducing fuel consumption and crew requirements. Slugs are common in classification yards, auto racks, and industrial sidings where sight lines matter more than independent power.The trade-off is coupling and uncoupling. A powered unit working alone can drop cars and back away; a unit with a slug attached cannot separate easily from its load. Most yard slugs operate under rules that keep them within the same property, often a single yard complex. Long-distance mainline trains never use slugs. The economics favor yards where the same slug works day after day with a rotating set of helper locomotives.
The term slug itself carries the sense of something heavy and inert, and in this context it sticks: a yard slug produces no power of its own and lumbers along only when shoved. It is not a small engine, not a switcher locomotive, and not a tender. It is ballast with purpose, and its very passivity makes it valuable where the operator's line of sight is the scarce resource.
