A break-of-gauge station is a railway junction where two or more tracks of incompatible widths meet. Because train bogies cannot run across both gauges, freight and passengers must be physically transferred from one train to another, or in some cases the cargo is simply moved from one platform to the other. This happens at a single facility rather than requiring transport to separate depots.
The most common scenario is where a standard gauge line (1,435 mm) meets a narrow gauge line (typically 1,000 mm, 1,067 mm, or 762 mm). Historically these stations were essential in countries like Spain, India, and Australia where different regions or eras built railways to different specifications. Modern examples persist wherever national rail networks use non-standard gauges: the India-Pakistan border station at Khokhrapar operates at the junction of 1,676 mm (broad gauge) and 1,000 mm (meter gauge) lines.
The most labour-intensive approach is manual transhipment: freight is unloaded from one train, stacked on the platform or in warehouses, and reloaded onto the second train. This is slow and costly, creating a genuine bottleneck in supply chains. For higher-volume routes, break-of-gauge stations often install bogie-exchange facilities, which lift the entire wagon body and swap out the wheel sets underneath. This preserves the load and reduces handling time, though it requires specialized equipment and skilled operators.
Passenger transfer at these stations ranges from simple platform walking to dedicated transfer sheds. The Spanish railways at Portbou, where standard gauge from France met Spanish broad gauge (1,668 mm), handled this for decades. Passengers simply changed trains; luggage presented more difficulty. Some stations installed transloaders, mechanical or hydraulic systems that shifted cargo between wagon heights without full unloading.
Break-of-gauge stations are infrastructure problems disguised as transfer points. They reduce throughput, increase costs, and invite regulatory complexity about liability during transfer. Modern supply chain philosophy treats them as obsolete wherever possible. Most have been eliminated through gauge standardization or through bypass routes, though some persist in mountainous terrain or where historical investment makes conversion uneconomical. They remain common in developing countries where multiple rail networks were built by different colonial or regional authorities at different times.
