Pan former: roll press that shapes flat sheet into stiffened panels

A pan former is a motorized roll-forming machine that progressively bends and shapes a flat metal sheet, usually steel or aluminium, into a finished panel with integral stiffening ribs or flanges. The sheet passes through a series of rotating steel rolls, each one advancing the form slightly until the blank emerges as a rigid, three-dimensional component. Pan formers handle sheets from about 0.5 mm to 3 mm thick and can produce widths ranging from 300 mm to over 1200 mm depending on machine size.

The work happens in a single pass. The sheet feeds straight through the roll stations, with each pair of rolls positioned to add incremental bend. Unlike press tools that work in discrete strokes, the pan former works continuously or semi-continuously, making it fast and economical for medium to high-volume runs. Common outputs include roof and wall panels for buildings, door frames, cable trays, and structural members in HVAC and electrical enclosures. The stiffening ribs formed into the panel increase rigidity without adding material weight, which is why the process suits both structural and non-structural panel applications.

Each machine is designed for a specific panel profile. Changing from one panel shape to another requires replacing the entire roll stack, a job taking hours and demanding precision alignment. The rolls themselves are hardened steel, typically case-hardened to resist wear during thousands of cycles. Feed speed, pressure between rolls, and material thickness must be matched carefully. Too fast a feed or too much pressure can wrinkle or crease the sheet; too little speed or pressure leaves incomplete bends. Most machines have mechanical or hydraulic roll pressure adjustment and variable-speed drives.

The main wear point is the roll set itself. Scratches or flats on a roll surface transfer directly to the panel, creating visible defects. Regular inspection and roll polishing or replacement keeps quality consistent. Operators must watch for edge cracking in harder materials or springback misalignment in softer ones. Sheet curl at the entry or edge waving at the exit are common problems that point to pressure imbalance or feed issues.

Pan formers sit at the intersection of roll forming and panel pressing. They are slower than high-speed coil-fed roll formers but faster and more flexible than individual press operations. The term "pan" originally referred to the shallow rectangular pans or trays these machines produced; the name has stuck even though modern machines make far more varied profiles. In the supply chain, they are typically offered as standalone machines by industrial equipment makers or integrated into complete panel production lines alongside shearing, punching, or piercing stations.
