breast down: drill and blast forward into solid rock

To breast down is to advance a tunnel heading by drilling a series of holes into the rock face ahead, loading them with explosive, and firing in sequence. The term describes the direction of work: the crew pushes the tunnel forward by attacking the solid breast or face of rock in front of them. This method was standard in hard rock tunnelling for mines, subways, and hydro schemes before modern tunnel boring machines became widespread.

The process requires precise hole spacing and blast timing. A driller or drill jumbo places holes across the face in a specific pattern, typically radiating outward from a central cut or burn hole that is fired first to relieve pressure. Perimeter holes are drilled slightly oversize and loaded lightly to preserve the walls. The blast loosens the rock; mucking equipment then clears it away before the next round of drilling begins. Progress per cycle depends on rock type and hole depth, but might advance 2 to 4 meters per blast in favorable conditions.

Variants exist in how holes are arranged and fired. A radial or cherry-pick pattern fires the cut first, then rings of holes in rapid succession. A V-shaped cut uses two large holes angled toward each other. The sequence matters: poor timing leaves rock stubbornly in place or throws it violently outward, endangering workers and structures. Noise, vibration, and fume management became serious concerns as urban tunnelling expanded, leading operators to prefer controlled blasting with delay detonators.

The term is now dated because it reflects the manual, blast-intensive methods of the mid-20th century. Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and roadheaders have replaced breast-down drilling on most modern projects, especially in cities where ground control and environmental limits are tight. However, the vocabulary persists in older technical manuals and among workers trained in conventional tunnelling. The method is still used in remote hard rock mines and occasionally where geology makes TBM work impractical.

Breast down sits at the intersection of mining and civil engineering terminology. The word breast derives from the face of the advancing tunnel; down refers to progress into the ground, not necessarily vertical descent. It is sometimes called heading advancement or face drilling in modern usage, but breast down captures the physical reality: the crew attacks the breast of rock, forcing forward one blast cycle at a time.
