A layer of concrete, typically 2 to 6 inches thick, poured below the structural slab but above a layer of wet or muddy soil.

A mud slab is a thin concrete layer, usually 2 to 6 inches thick, cast directly onto wet or poorly drained soil before the main structural slab goes down. Its purpose is straightforward: to provide a stable, clean, level working surface on ground that would otherwise be unstable, muddy, or contaminated. It sits between the earth and the structural slab, acting as a buffer and foundation platform.

The mud slab is not part of the building's load-bearing structure. It carries no design loads and takes no bending moment calculations. Instead, it serves practical on-site purposes: it prevents the structural slab from sinking into soft ground, keeps water and contaminants away from the slab surface during and after pouring, and gives workers a clean platform on which to set formwork, rebar, and other structural elements. On wet sites, it is essential.

Concrete quality for a mud slab is modest. Most contractors use a lean mix, often a low-strength concrete around 4 to 6 MPa, to keep costs down. Some specify a specific grade such as C10 or equivalent. The slab is typically unreinforced, though a light mesh is sometimes added to control shrinkage cracking if the slab spans 20 feet or more. Thickness depends on ground conditions: softer or wetter ground calls for the thicker end of the range.

Mud slabs fail when ground preparation is skipped. If organic material, topsoil, or standing water is left beneath the slab, the concrete will crack and settle unevenly, and the structural slab above it may follow. The proper sequence is: clear and level the ground, remove soft material, install drainage if needed, compact the base, then pour the mud slab. Only after the mud slab has cured should the structural slab be placed on top.

The term "mud slab" itself is informal and varies regionally. In some areas it is called a "blinding slab," a "levelling slab," or a "lean concrete slab." British practice often reserves the term for the specific layer laid below a structural slab on uncertain ground. The word "mud" refers not to the slab itself but to the conditions it is meant to overcome. In arid or well-drained regions where ground is always firm and dry, a mud slab may not be necessary.
