A Bresnan nozzle is a rotating water-delivery device designed to fight fires in basements, cellars, and other spaces below ground level or suspended floors. It consists of a brass or bronze body with multiple angled outlet ports arranged around its circumference. When water pressure forces the nozzle to spin, these ports discharge water jets in a complete circular pattern, allowing a firefighter standing above to suppress flames in an area they cannot reach directly or see clearly.
The nozzle is lowered through a floor opening, hatchway, or stairwell on a rope or chain while water flows through its supply line. Pressure alone drives the rotation, requiring no moving parts to be manually operated. Typical discharge angles range from 45 to 60 degrees from horizontal, creating overlapping spray coverage. Flow rates depend on water pressure and nozzle design, but industrial models commonly deliver 60 to 120 gallons per minute.
Bresnan nozzles are most valuable in basement fires and fires in concealed spaces where heat, smoke, and structural concerns make entry hazardous. The circular spray pattern covers a larger footprint than a hand-held stream directed downward, and the nozzle can be rotated or reoriented by adjusting rope tension. However, the device works only where there is an opening above the fire area, and water spray cannot be observed directly, requiring the operator to rely on pressure feedback and timing.
The design originated in the early 20th century as a solution to a specific tactical problem: how to deliver water to spaces firefighters could not safely enter or even see. The name comes from the nozzle's rotary action and its association with low-point or basement suppression work. Modern variants include versions with adjustable spray angles and differing outlet configurations, though the fundamental principle remains unchanged.
Because basement and concealed-space fires create extreme risk from collapse, explosion, and backdraft, the Bresnan nozzle remains part of standard fire department equipment in regions with basements and suspended-floor construction. It is also used for structural cooling and for delivering foam or other extinguishing agents, though it performs best with water. Training focuses on recognizing when entry is impossible and on correct placement and rope management to avoid nozzle stalling or pressure loss.
