The physical setup varies with terrain and water type. A filling site may be nothing more than a cleared bank where a drafting apparatus can be positioned and suction hose lowered into the water; or it may include constructed features such as a hard standing area for apparatus, a reinforced entry point to prevent bank collapse, or a portable pier or float to maintain hose intake above silt and sediment. Some sites use a portable drafting basket or strainer on the intake end to prevent debris from clogging the pump.
Location and preparation
Filling sites are identified and sometimes formally marked before wildfire season in high-risk areas, particularly in regions lacking mains water supply. Fire crews may pre-scout accessible water bodies along roads and trails. The site must support the weight and footprint of a fire engine or tender truck, allow the apparatus to position its pump near the water, and permit safe hose deployment. Soft banks, tidal zones, or shallow water that dries seasonally may render a site unreliable.
A persistent problem is sediment draw, which occurs when the intake hose pulls silt, sand, or fine material from the bottom or bank, damaging pump impellers and clogging nozzles downstream. Operators must position intake above the bottom, keep suction hose angled upward if possible, and allow settlement time. Dense aquatic vegetation or ice cover can make sites temporarily unusable.
