A bridge route is a railroad line, typically short and operated independently, that physically connects two or more major railroad carriers at junction points. It serves as a transfer facility, allowing freight and passengers to move between different major railroad networks without requiring either carrier to own or operate the connecting segment. The bridge route operator acts as a middleman, handling the logistics of interchange and the movement of cars between the connecting railroads.

Bridge routes occupy specific geographic niches, usually in industrial areas, ports, or at strategic rail junctions. They may be owned by a municipal authority, a switching and terminal company, or a private operator. The most common scenario involves a short line that runs through a city or industrial zone where two major carriers' main lines come close enough to warrant a connection. The bridge route operator maintains its own track, switches, and sometimes staging yards, charging each major carrier for the use of the connection.

Revenue and Operations

Revenue for a bridge route comes primarily from per-car switching fees and demurrage charges. The operator bills both the originating and receiving major carriers for each car that crosses the bridge route. This creates a financial incentive for efficiency: the faster cars move across the connection, the higher the throughput and the more fees collected. Many bridge routes operate 24 hours daily to maximize utilization, though staffing and traffic on the connecting major lines may limit actual activity.

Bridge routes face operational challenges that larger carriers do not. They depend entirely on traffic flowing through their connection; if either major carrier reduces operations or reroutes shipments, revenue drops sharply. Maintenance costs fall entirely on the bridge route operator, including rail replacement, ballast work, and locomotive maintenance if the operator owns its own power. Some bridge routes share locomotives with the connecting carriers to reduce capital burden, though this complicates scheduling and liability.

The term bridge route reflects the physical and economic role of such lines: they bridge a gap in the network that neither major carrier found profitable to construct or operate independently. Well-positioned bridge routes, especially those serving major industrial districts or ports, remain viable business models; poorly located ones may struggle or cease operations when traffic patterns shift.
