To broom a membrane means to press and smooth it firmly onto a substrate using a broom, squeegee, or similar tool while the adhesive underneath is still wet. The goal is simple: eliminate air pockets and wrinkles, and force the membrane into full contact with the adhesive so it bonds properly. Without brooming, the membrane may bridge over voids, trap air bubbles, or fail to cure evenly, leaving weak spots that water will eventually exploit.
In roofing and waterproofing, brooming happens immediately after the membrane (typically bituminous, synthetic rubber, or PVC) is laid down. The worker uses a long-handled push broom or a squeegee, working from the center outward to push trapped air toward the edges. The technique must follow the direction of the adhesive spread, not against it, or you risk pushing the adhesive out from under the membrane entirely. Pressure is firm but controlled; too much force can tear thin membranes or force adhesive out of the joint.
The type of broom matters. Roofers typically use soft-bristled push brooms (never stiff brooms, which damage the membrane) or plastic squeegees. Some crews prefer wide rubber or urethane squeegees for larger areas because they distribute pressure more evenly than bristles. The membrane must be broomed before the adhesive sets, which means timing depends on temperature, adhesive type, and membrane thickness. In warm conditions, you may have only 15 to 30 minutes before the adhesive becomes too stiff to move the membrane.
Common problems and variants
Brooming fails when adhesive is applied too sparingly; if there is not enough material under the membrane, brooming pushes it into voids rather than eliminating them. Conversely, excessive adhesive can be forced out at the edges, creating visible dark streaks and leaving insufficient bond behind. Overlaps where two membrane sheets meet require careful brooming to ensure both layers press down fully without displacing the adhesive seam itself. Wind can cool adhesive and membrane quickly, making brooming harder; windy conditions on low-temperature days are notorious for poor brooming results.
The term itself comes directly from the tool: a broom smooths wrinkles and debris from the membrane surface just as it sweeps a floor. In modern practice, brooming is considered a quality control step as much as a technique. Inspectors often check for bubbles or voids by walking the finished membrane and listening for hollow sounds, or by conducting adhesion tests on samples. Poor brooming is one of the leading causes of early membrane failure, making the five minutes spent brooming properly worth far more than the cost of a membrane replacement years later.
