Budding is a propagation technique in which a single dormant bud, called a scion, is inserted under the bark of a rootstock plant and bound in place to grow. Unlike grafting, which joins larger woody segments, budding uses only one bud taken from a mature shoot of the desired variety. The bud unites with the rootstock through callus formation, and once established, it grows into a new plant that combines the rootstock's vigor or disease resistance with the scion's fruit or flower characteristics.

The process begins with a T-shaped or shield-shaped cut made through the bark of the rootstock, typically on young stems between 5 and 15 millimeters in diameter. A single dormant bud with a small shield of bark and underlying wood (called a budstick) is cut from the scion material and slipped into this opening. The bud sits against the exposed wood layer called the cambium. The wound is then wrapped tightly with grafting tape, rubber strips, or waxed cloth to exclude air and hold the bud firmly in place.

Budding thrives in warm seasons when bark separates easily from the wood, usually late summer in temperate zones. Commercial orchards rely heavily on budding because it is faster than multi-bud grafting, uses less scion material, and succeeds on a wider range of rootstock sizes. Stone fruit trees, apples, citrus, and roses are routinely budded at nurseries; a skilled operator can complete dozens of buds per hour. The bud remains dormant through winter and breaks into growth the following spring, or it is forced into immediate growth by cutting back the rootstock above it.

Variants and complications

Chip budding cuts a rectangular chip from both scion and rootstock and fits them together without relying on bark separation; this works when bark does not lift easily and extends the budding season. Patch budding removes a larger square of bark and wood, useful for thick-barked species. Failure rates depend on cambial contact, rootstock vigor, ambient temperature, and pest pressure. Bud-take rates of 70 to 90 percent are typical in managed conditions; rot, insect damage, or poor timing can reduce success significantly. The term budding in horticulture is distinct from the biological budding seen in asexual reproduction of yeast or hydra.

Budding has been documented in European fruit growing since at least the 1600s and remains the dominant propagation method for named fruit varieties wherever clonal copying is preferred over seed. It preserves exact genetic identity across millions of plants, which is essential for commercial consistency. The technique sits at the intersection of nursery practice, breeding strategy, and orchard economics; without budding, the infrastructure of fruit production would not function.
