A bulletproof vest is a wearable protective garment constructed from multiple layers of high-strength fibers or ceramic plates, designed to absorb and disperse the kinetic energy of projectiles. The wearer fits it over the torso, either as a standalone panel or integrated into a carrier garment. Its primary function is to reduce trauma and penetration from bullets, shrapnel, and blunt impact.

Soft body armor relies on synthetic fibers: aramid (Kevlar, Twaron), polyethylene (Dyneema, Spectra), or para-aramid weaves. These materials work by forcing projectiles to delaminate across multiple plies, converting kinetic energy into heat and deformation across the weave structure. A typical soft vest contains 20 to 40 layers, each roughly 0.15 to 0.25 millimeters thick. Hard plates, usually ceramic or steel, provide higher protection ratings but add significant weight and restrict movement. Most operational vests combine soft panels with a hard plate carrier capable of holding ceramic or composite inserts over vital organs.

Protection levels and ratings

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) defines protection levels from Level IIA through Level IV. Level IIA stops 9 mm and .40 caliber handgun rounds. Level IIIA adds protection against .44 Magnum and shotgun slugs, typically achieved with soft armor alone. Levels III and IV require hard plates: Level III stops most rifle rounds up to 7.62 NATO, while Level IV is the highest rating, stopping armor-piercing ammunition. Body armor degrades over time as fibers weaken from moisture, UV exposure, and handling; vests typically require replacement every 5 to 10 years depending on storage conditions and use.

The textile producer faces tradeoffs between protection, weight, and breathability. A Level IIIA vest weighs 5 to 8 kilograms; adding ceramic plates increases this to 10 to 15 kilograms. Heat retention and restricted airflow are persistent problems in soft armor, leading to fatigue and dehydration in high-stress situations. Manufacturers address this through moisture-wicking liners, spacer fabrics, and modular designs that allow cooling breaks.

Bulletproof vests are manufactured by laminating prepared fiber sheets under heat and pressure, or by stitching panels and inserting pre-made plate pockets. Quality control is critical: fiber orientation, ply count, adhesive coverage, and seam integrity all affect performance. A single manufacturing defect, such as misaligned plies or inadequate resin saturation, can reduce protection at that spot by 40 percent or more. Because these garments are worn during high-risk work, textile and materials suppliers are bound by strict military and law enforcement procurement standards.
