In knitting, a cable is a vertical textural column created by crossing groups of stitches over each other in a deliberate sequence. The crossed stitches sit on top of the fabric surface, forming a raised, rope-like pattern that can twist, spiral, or braid depending on how the crossing is ordered. This is one of the most recognizable hand and machine knit effects, common in sweaters, scarves, and heavy knitwear.
The mechanism relies on a cable needle, a short double-pointed tool used to temporarily hold stitches while others are worked ahead of them. For example, a basic two-over-two cable might hold 2 stitches on the cable needle, knit the next 2 stitches from the main needle, then knit the held stitches. This reversal of stitch order is what creates the twist. The number of stitches crossed, their frequency, and whether they twist left or right determine the cable's visual character.
Cable patterns vary widely in complexity. Simple cables repeat every 6 to 8 rows; complex cables might involve multiple crossing sequences, varying stitch counts, or combinations with purl stitches to create shadow effects. Gansey cables, found in traditional fisherman sweaters, use tight, repeated twists over many rows. Aran sweaters feature elaborate symbolic cables with names like honeycomb, blackberry, and tree of life.
Machine production and common issues
Hand knitters can execute cables at will using a cable needle. Machine knitting requires either manual manipulation of needles (on standard frames) or dedicated electronic jacquard and cable mechanisms on industrial machines. The technique is labor-intensive either way, which is why heavily cabled garments command higher prices.
Cables are prone to stitch laddering if tension is uneven or if a stitch drops during crossing; the twisted structure makes dropped stitches harder to recover. They also draw fabric tighter horizontally and vertically, so gauge is critical and garment width must be calculated carefully. Yarn choice matters: cables show poorly in thin, slick yarns and best in heavier, textured fibers where the light-and-shadow contrast is visible.
