A bunch is a localized concentration of ore that occurs within a lode or scattered through the surrounding wallrock without forming a continuous vein. Unlike a regular lode, which runs as a fairly consistent body, a bunch appears as an isolated or clustered patch, sometimes richly mineralized and sometimes marginal in grade. It can occur within the pay zone of a mine or in apparently sterile rock, making it both a source of unexpected recovery and an unpredictable hazard to mine planning.
Bunches vary widely in shape and size. They may be lens-shaped, irregular nodular masses, or stringers of mineralized material; some are just a few centimeters across, others extend several meters. Grade within a bunch is often higher than in the surrounding vein, making them attractive to work, but their discontinuous nature means a miner cannot rely on them appearing at regular intervals. This unpredictability affects reserve estimates and extraction scheduling.
Origins and geological context
Bunches form through several processes: localized remobilization of ore minerals along fractures, contact metasomatism in host rock near an ore body, or residual enrichment in weathered zones above a primary vein. The term itself describes the visible symptom rather than the cause. In underground mining, a bunch may be recognized only when face advance encounters it, requiring immediate adjustment to ore handling and grade tracking.
Detection of bunches depends on sampling and logging during development. Visual inspection, assay of blast rounds, and geological mapping can identify them, but small bunches may be missed or mined as waste. In some deposits, particularly in copper and gold mining, bunches can represent significant secondary value or hazardous dilution depending on their grade and location relative to planned stopes.
The economic significance of bunches lies in their concentration effect: a small patch of high-grade ore can justify extended development or selective mining in an otherwise marginal zone. Conversely, a bunch of sub-ore-grade material must be tracked to avoid inflating mill feed grade. In historical hand-mining operations, bunches were often the targets of focused effort; modern bulk mining may treat them as local grade variation within the ore body.
