A butment cheek is the solid wood surface that remains on either side of a mortise after the hole has been cut. When a tenon is driven into that mortise, the shoulders of the tenon (the stepped edges between the protruding peg and the main body of the joining timber) push directly against these cheeks. The cheeks are load-bearing surfaces, and their integrity is critical to joint strength.

The thickness of the cheek material determines how much shoulder-bearing surface is available. In through mortises, both cheeks are exposed on opposite faces of the timber. In blind mortises, only the inner cheek exists, and the outer surface of the timber remains intact. A mortise cut too wide or too close to an edge will leave cheeks that are too thin or irregular, weakening the joint severely and risking sudden failure under load.

Woodworkers must plan mortise position carefully to ensure adequate cheek thickness relative to the timber's cross-section. A mortise roughly centered in the stock leaves balanced cheeks of equal width. Off-center mortises create unequal cheeks, which is sometimes necessary when joining timbers of different thicknesses, but demands careful calculation to avoid stress concentration on the thinner cheek. Cheeks are typically measured in millimeters, and values below 10mm on any face are generally considered risky in structural work.

The name derives from the cheeks of the face: the mortise is the mouth, and the cheeks are the flesh on either side of it. This metaphor appears consistently in historical woodworking texts and remains standard terminology across English-speaking trades. Regional variation exists, but the concept is universal in timber-frame carpentry, joinery, and cabinet-making.

Defects in cheeks include diagonal grain that tears during mortising, crushing or bruising during joint assembly, and crushing failure during service if the tenon shoulders are oversized or if the joint is misaligned. Inspection of cheek condition before assembly is part of good practice; damage often means the component should be rejected or repaired by piecing rather than used as-is.
