butt
An end of something, often distinguished in some way from the other end.
butt: where two pieces meet end-to-end
In carpentry, a butt joint is the simplest and weakest way to connect two pieces of wood: you cut the end of one piece square and push it against the face, edge, or end of another piece, then fasten them together with nails, screws, or glue. The cut end is the butt. No overlap, no interlocking grain, no shoulder to bear load. It works because it is quick and uses no extra material, but it fails easily in shear and tension.
A butt can be cut at 90 degrees to the grain (a square butt) or at an angle (a beveled butt). The quality of the joint depends entirely on how square and true that cut is. Any gap between the butt and the mating surface creates a weak point. In frame-and-panel work, a butt joint between the stiles and rails is reinforced with mortise-and-tenon joinery to handle the stresses of a door or window frame. In simple box construction, butt joints are acceptable because the glue and fasteners carry modest loads.
Where butt joints live in the trade
A butt joint appears everywhere in built carpentry: shelves butted to the inside face of a bookcase, door frames butted into drywall openings, trim boards butted at inside corners. Edge-butting (end grain to end grain) is the weakest configuration and is avoided in structural work. Face-butting (end grain to long grain) is stronger because the face grain offers more gluing surface and holds fasteners better. End-butting (end grain to end grain) occurs in butt splices where two pieces must be joined lengthwise, as in a run of blocking.
The weakness of the butt joint is precisely why carpenters reach for it: no layout, no sawing a tenon, no waiting for complex glue-ups. On site, speed matters. Butt joints perform well in compression (a shelf bearing weight) and adequately under simple bending if fasteners are staggered and placed close to the joint line. They fail visibly if the wood moves, and they lack the strength of mortise-and-tenon, half-lap, or dovetail joinery.
The term butt comes from an old word for pushing or striking end-to-end, and it appears in many trades: plumbing butt welds join pipes end-to-end without filler material, and masonry butt joints are mortar lines between units. In all cases, a butt is a straightforward meeting of ends, and what matters is how well the surfaces are prepared and what holds them together.
