A cable needle is a short, blunt needle, typically 4 to 6 inches long, used in hand knitting to temporarily hold stitches while other stitches are worked past them. This creates the twisted rope effect characteristic of cable patterns. The needle itself is usually slightly shorter and thicker than the working needles, with a slight curve or bend to prevent stitches from sliding off during the hold.

Cable needles come in several forms. The most common is a straight needle with a gentle curve near the tip, often resembling a crochet hook in profile. Some are double-ended with different gauges on each end. Materials vary: aluminum, bamboo, and wood are typical for hand knitting, while stainless steel versions exist for industrial or institutional settings. The working diameter must roughly match the yarn weight being used, from sizes suitable for fine fingering weight to those for bulky yarns.

How the cable stitch works

To create a cable, the knitter slips a group of stitches (typically 2 to 4) onto the cable needle and holds them to either the front or back of the work. The next group of stitches is then knitted normally. After those stitches are worked, the stitches on the cable needle are knitted off. The resulting crossed arrangement of yarn produces the three-dimensional twisted effect. The larger the group of stitches crossed, the more dramatic the twist; a 4-over-4 cable is more pronounced than a 2-over-2.

Cable needles must have sufficient grip to hold stitches securely without the risk of them rolling off, yet the surface must be smooth enough to allow stitches to move freely when needed. A needle that is too smooth risks dropped stitches; one too textured will catch yarn. The slight curve found on quality cable needles serves both purposes: it cradles the stitches and provides a subtle mechanical advantage when hand-holding multiple stitches under tension.

Common failure points include the needle bending permanently under repeated use, the working diameter becoming worn smaller through friction, or the end rounding off so stitches no longer hold securely. Industrial production environments where repetitive cable-knit items are made (sweaters, blankets, automotive trim fabrics) may use mechanical cable-making devices rather than hand manipulation, reducing reliance on the traditional cable needle for production work. However, bespoke or small-batch cable knitwear production still depends on them entirely.
