A tag strip is a phenolic or fiberglass base carrying multiple brass solder lugs (tags) arranged in one or more rows. Each lug is a small eyelet or flat pad, typically 0.125 to 0.25 inches wide, mounted through the strip and clinched underneath to hold firm. Wires are inserted through the hole, bent around the lug, and soldered in place. The assembly lets you terminate many conductors in a compact, organized bundle without individual terminal blocks.

Tag strips come in single-row and double-row configurations, with lug counts ranging from 5 to 25 or more per strip. Standard spacing is typically 0.25 or 0.375 inches between centers. The base material resists heat and moisture; older strips used phenolic (Bakelite), while modern versions use fiberglass-reinforced epoxy for better durability under thermal cycling and vibration. Lugs are usually nickel-plated or tin-plated brass to reduce corrosion and improve solder wetting.

In practice, tag strips serve as junction or distribution points in control panels, instrumentation racks, and equipment harnesses. A single strip can consolidate 10 to 20 separate wire connections into a few square inches of real estate. Because the lugs are electrically isolated from one another by the base material, cross-talk and unintended shorts are minimized. The soldered joint itself is permanent and reliable, unlike push terminals, making tag strips standard in high-vibration or critical-performance applications.

Common issues and limitations

Solder joints on tag strips can crack under thermal shock or repeated flexing of connected wires if the joint lacks sufficient mechanical support. Poor solder wetting, often caused by flux residue or oxidized lug surfaces, creates high-resistance or intermittent connections. Wire insulation can also char if the soldering iron lingers too long near the lug. Many technicians now prefer wire-to-board connectors or PCB-mounted headers because they are faster to terminate and allow field replacement without desoldering, but tag strips remain the standard retrofit solution where connector density or space constraints forbid other methods.
