A cabré aircraft is one pitched sharply nose-up, tail down, whether in flight or sitting on the ground. The term comes from French, where it means reared up, like a horse standing on its hind legs. In aviation maintenance and operations, you will encounter this word when describing an unstable or dangerous pitch attitude, particularly during takeoff, landing, or when an aircraft has shifted on its gear.
During takeoff, a pilot may pull back on the control column to achieve the correct rotation angle for liftoff, typically 10 to 15 degrees nose-up depending on aircraft type and weight. If rotation is too aggressive or continues unchecked, the aircraft becomes excessively cabré and may stall, or strike the tail skid or tail cone on the runway. This is a recognized hazard in high-performance or heavily-loaded aircraft, particularly those with aft centre of gravity.
On the ground, cabré usually refers to an aircraft resting with weight shifted toward the rear wheels or skids, nose high and tail low. This can happen when cargo or fuel is loaded too far aft, when the aircraft sits nose-down on soft ground and settles, or when tow personnel fail to maintain level attitude during towing. Excessive ground cabré stresses the rear fuselage and landing gear, risking structural damage to the empennage or tail attachment points.
Cabré is most common in French-speaking maintenance culture and flight operations, though English speakers in European and Canadian aviation may use it. You may also see the opposite: an aircraft in nosedown or tail-high attitude. The practical concern is always the same: pitch attitude that violates design limits and creates structural or performance risk. Ground handling procedures specify acceptable limits on nose-up pitch to protect tail clearance and landing gear alignment.
Prevention in maintenance means checking aircraft trim and loading documents, securing cargo to prevent aft shift, and using nose tow vehicles or tow bars that maintain level pitch. Pilots are trained to recognize excessive rotation and to recognize the pitch attitude and airspeed cues that signal approach to stall. Any incident where an aircraft became cabré beyond safe limits should be documented and the structure inspected for damage, particularly at the tail root and rear fuselage attachment.
